Why Refurbish?

The average 53 lb desktop PC and CRT monitor requires:
  • 530 lbs of fossil fuels
  • 50 lbs of chemicals
  • 3,330 lbs of water
  • 75% of PC energy consumption has happened before a new PC is turned on
  • from Williams, Eric and Kuehr, Ruediger, Computers and the Environment, Understanidng and Managing Their Impacts.
      • Many PCs that are unused can be reused - helping needy families, schools, and other non-profit organizations - instead of being stored, disposed of, or recycled
      • Donations of PC equipment are tax deductable (The Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit)
      • Data is wiped from all donated computers
      • Computers are repaired, upgraded by Heald College students and staff
      • Licensed copies of Windows XP Professional are installed
      • The Project is a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher
      • More than 750 refurbished computers have been given away
      • Students feel good about using their skills to give back to the community
